About the Book Awards
MN Book Awards Home

The Minnesota Humanities Prize for Literature was established by the Minnesota Humanities Commission in 2001 and carried a $500 prize. It was given annually to recognize contributions to literature and the advancement of the humanities in Minnesota. Past winners were:

2005 Joseph A. Amato
2004 Paul Gruchow (presented posthumously)
2003 Sen. Paul Wellstone (presented posthumously)
2002 Louise Erdrich
2001 Carol Bly
The Honor Award recognizes works of unusual achievement, works that fall outside the established standard categories, or those that may not meet the Minnesota Book Awards eligibility criteria. Books with strong Minnesota content, written by a non-Minnesota author, may be considered for an Honor Award.
2001 A Man's Reach, Gov. Elmer L. Andersen, author & Lori Sturdevant, editor
The John Flanagan Prize was awarded to authors in conjunction with the Minnesota Book Awards in 1997-2000. The award recognized outstanding achievement in the literature & culture of the Midwest.

The Minnesota Book Awards is a project of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library,
in consortium with the Saint Paul Public Library and the City of Saint Paul. Outreach partners
and supporting organizations include: MELSA, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minnesota
Department of Education—State Library Services, and Minnesota Educational Media Organization.
