Chastity Brown - February 23
Chastity Brown has been called “a roots soul singer of the first order.” Considered one of the most exciting writer / artists to hit the Minneapolis music scene, Brown recently returned from a tour of the East Coast, including New York City, Vermont and New Hampshire and the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville where she is steadily building a loyal following. Chastity and her bandmates have developed a creative camaraderie that yields a groove-based soul tonic. Check out "By the Train Tracks" on YouTube.
We Became Actors - March 8
We Became Actors have a hard time standing still. They throw tambourines, clap hands, kick over cocktails. The latter by accident. Usually. Like a Sunday hangover, they're loud, bright and soaked in gin. They power through pop embellished with flourishes of delay and synthesizer. We Became Actors call Minneapolis home. And they love it.
Check out their music at Bandcamp.
Missed it! Black Blondie - January 26
Black Blondie is a band in the purest sense of the word: the tightly knit four-piece unit collectively writes and performs all of their music. The band's daring frontwoman, Samahra, has the attitude and charisma of a punk rock diva. She has a voice that would serve any American Idol three times over but lyrics that shock with wit and intellect. Black Blondie's live show, distinctive songwriting and innovative musical style has found them sharing the stage with The Roots, Amy Winehouse, The Coup and J*Davey. Check out their music on MySpace.
Missed it! Murzik - February 2
Murzik is a dark folk/neofolk band formed in Minneapolis, Minneapolis in 2003. The band started out by experimenting with mixing old eastern European folk and Midwest Americana sounds together to form a sound which they coined as "Dark Folk." The band has often been compared with other groups such as DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello, although Murzik’s music steers more towards a darker sound reminiscent of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. Check out their song "Only You" on YouTube.
